In our Product-Engineering teams we’ve made a deliberate choice to work together, in person, every day. Not because we think remote doesn’t work, but because we’re building something exceptionally ambitious. Creating a company that defines its category takes relentless focus, fast decision-making, and deep, cross-functional collaboration. We believe those things happen faster and better when we share the same physical space.
Relocating to a new country can be daunting, but it is also exciting and full of new experiences. To help you navigate the move, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about life in Budapest: from visa logistics and settling in, to what to expect day to day.
Please note that the relocation package is subject to given conditions that will be fully disclosed to you in due time by the People Team.
The cost of living in Budapest is lower than in many other attractive European capitals. Check out the specifics here.
Hungarian currency: after joining the European Union, Hungary decided to keep its own currency, the Hungarian Forint, written as “Ft” or HUF. You can check the conversion rates here.
Finding an apartment is not as hard (and surely, not as expensive) as in many other European cities. Depending on your preferences (and budget), you can live in the city center, the Buda side, the Pest side, or in the suburbs. And if you’re wondering about how many expats live here: it’s around 7%.
There are several online communities where you can meet and talk with other expats about moving here, and life in Budapest and Hungary in general.
Budapest has consistently been showing up on the list of safest cities in the world.
There is a lot to see and do in the inner city of Budapest, but if you’re more into hiking and outdoor activities, nature is also within easy reach around the city. And you can easily travel to all corners of Europe from here as Budapest is a well-connected international hub.
And last but not least, public transportation is affordable, available 24/7, and well connected.
We gathered everything you might want to know in The Budapest Compass.
The relocation process usually takes about a month. After you accept our offer, our immigration and relocation support vendor will be in touch and walk you through the process of getting the documents you need to be able to work in Hungary (e.g. tax card and social security number). You’ll also have to find an apartment, as you need a temporary address in Hungary to get the needed documents and a work permit. Once you have that all, you can start your journey with Shapr3D!
Your relocation process can take 3+ months, depending on your country of origin.
After you accept our offer, the first and most important step is to start the Visa application. Our immigration and relocation vendor will contact you upon your offer acceptance and walk you through the process. They will manage your documents and Visa application, keep you updated along the way, and support and represent you in relation with the Hungarian government and authorities via a power of attorney setup.
The Visa approval process usually takes 2 to 4 months, and we strongly advise you to resign at your current workplace only once your Visa request is officially approved. After that, we can start planning and booking your move to Budapest. Once here – and before you can start working – you’ll need a tax card, a social security number, and a local bank account. Normally the timeframe for getting all these is about 1 month. You’ll also have to find an apartment, as you need a temporary address in Hungary to get the needed documents. Finally, once you'll get the residence permit, you can start your journey with Shapr3D!
