The best iPad for CAD: How to choose your device for Shapr3D

TL;DR: If your iPad runs iPadOS 17, it runs Shapr3D. For everyday modeling, an M-series iPad Air is the sweet spot. For large assemblies and heavy imported files, choose an iPad Pro with the 13" screen and more RAM.

Shapr3D was born on the iPad. It's the only professional CAD built for the Apple Pencil, running on the same Siemens Parasolid modeling engine as SOLIDWORKS and NX. The models you build on your iPad are manufacturing-ready.

But Apple currently sells four iPad lines, two screen sizes, three Apple Pencils, and storage options from 128GB to 2TB. This guide covers which specs matter for CAD, why they matter, and what iPads Shapr3D users actually work on.

First, the baseline: which iPads run Shapr3D

The requirement is simple: Shapr3D requires iPadOS 17 or later. If your iPad can install iPadOS 17, it can run Shapr3D. In practice, that means:

  • iPad Pro: all generations
  • iPad: 6th generation (2018) and later
  • iPad Air: 3rd generation (2019) and later
  • iPad mini: 5th generation (2019) and later

An Apple Pencil is recommended but not required. You can also model with a keyboard and a mouse or trackpad.

If your iPad is on this list, you can start designing today. If you're buying new or used, the rest of this guide is about the difference between "runs Shapr3D" and "runs Shapr3D well."

Shapr3D runs on your device, not in the cloud

All modeling in Shapr3D happens on your device. When you extrude a sketch, fillet an edge, or import a STEP file, your iPad's chip and memory do the work. There is no server on the other end.

The cloud has one job: keeping your projects in sync across your iPad, Mac, and Windows PC.

This design has real benefits. Shapr3D works fully offline, on a plane or in a workshop with no signal, and there is no lag between your input and the result. But it also means the iPad you choose directly determines how fast Shapr3D feels. That's why the specs below matter.

Simple or complex: what kind of work will you do?

Performance can't be predicted from file size alone. A small file can be heavy, and a large one can be light. What actually determines how hard your iPad has to work:

  • Number of bodies in your design
  • Number of faces. Designs with complex, curvy surfaces can have a lot of faces.
  • Number of sketch curves. When you import a file, Shapr3D converts planar curves into editable sketches, and lots of curves means more work.

With that in mind, it helps to be honest about which of these two profiles fits you:

Simple use case: You design your own parts from scratch. Brackets, enclosures, fixtures, furniture, parts for 3D printing. Your designs have a handful of bodies, and your assemblies stay under roughly 20 parts. Any supported iPad handles this comfortably.

Complex use case: You import large files from other CAD systems, work with designs that have hundreds of bodies, complex surfaces with thousands of faces, or lots of curves. This is where CPU and RAM start to matter, so aim for a newer M-series iPad with more memory.

The criteria that matter

1. The chip: modeling speed

Every modeling action asks your iPad to recalculate your design's exact geometry. A newer chip means faster modeling, faster imports, and faster rebuilds when you change a dimension.

For the simple use case, A-series iPads are fine, and a 20-part assembly is easy work for most iPads. For anything beyond that, go with an M-series chip (M1 or later). Every iPad Pro since 2021 and every iPad Air since 2022 has one, so a refurbished model is an affordable way in.

2. RAM: the ceiling on model complexity

RAM determines how much geometry your iPad can hold in memory at once. This matters more on iPad than on desktop, because iPadOS limits how much memory a single app can use. When memory runs low, imports slow down, and in the worst case a very large import can fail, and Shapr3D can crash with an out-of-memory error.

The good news: Shapr3D's import options let you prioritize speed over geometry repair, which cuts import times for large files by up to 70% and can rescue files that previously failed on low-memory devices. But the simplest fix is buying enough RAM in the first place.

Rules of thumb:

  • Simple use case: any supported iPad
  • Regular product design work: 8GB (any current M-series iPad Air or Pro)
  • Complex use case with heavy imported CAD data: 16GB (iPad Pro, 1TB or 2TB configurations)

3. Screen size: more room to work

Your screen is your entire workspace: canvas, toolbar, and Items Manager at once. The bigger the screen, the more room you have for your model alongside dimensions, section views, and the history sidebar. That makes the 13" models the best choice for a primary CAD device, with the 11" models as the more portable option.

Smaller doesn't mean compromised, though. Shapr3D's adaptive UI scales to every supported screen size, including the iPad mini, and we test extensively on these devices to make sure everything runs as it should. Plenty of users model on a mini in the field or on the shop floor precisely because it fits in a jacket pocket.

If the iPad will be your main CAD machine, choose 13". If it's a mobile companion to a Mac or PC, any size works.

4. Apple Pencil: check compatibility before you buy

The Apple Pencil is the most natural way to model in Shapr3D, but not every Pencil works with every iPad. This catches buyers off guard more than any other spec:

  • Apple Pencil Pro: current iPad Pro and iPad Air models
  • Apple Pencil (2nd generation): earlier iPad Pro and iPad Air models with magnetic side charging
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C): works across most current iPads, including the base iPad
  • Apple Pencil (1st generation): older base iPads

Check Apple's compatibility list for your exact model before checkout. If you're buying used, make sure the Pencil generation matches the iPad generation. They are not interchangeable.

Note: Non Apple Pencil styluses might work with Shapr3D, but we test and build for the Apple Pencil. No functionality of the Apple Pencil is utilized in the app (e.g. pressure sensitivity)

7. Storage: the base configuration is enough

Shapr3D design files are small, and projects sync automatically through Shapr3D's cloud across your devices. For CAD purposes, 128GB or 256GB is enough.

One exception: on iPad Pro, RAM is tied to storage. The 16GB configurations are the 1TB and 2TB models, which are also the ones that offer nano-texture glass. If you're in the complex use case and need maximum RAM, the extra storage comes with it. Otherwise, put the savings toward a Pencil and a keyboard.

8. Connectivity: your iPad can be a desktop too

Every current iPad has USB-C, which supports external displays, drives, and hubs. Pair your iPad with a keyboard, a mouse or trackpad, and a monitor, and you have a desktop setup at your desk with full mobility the moment you unplug. Shapr3D's adaptive UI is built for this: the same project and the same tools, whether you're sketching with a Pencil or dimensioning drawings at a workstation.

If you work in the field or on client sites, the cellular option keeps projects syncing without Wi-Fi. And because all modeling happens on the device, Shapr3D works fully offline either way.

What Shapr3D users actually model on

Advice is one thing, data is another. Here's a snapshot of the iPads used by Shapr3D subscribers in late August 2026.

Chips: Over 68% of devices run an Apple Silicon M-series chip. The single most common chip is the M1 at 20.4%, ahead of the M4 (17.3%), M2 (16.6%), and M5 (9.7%). The takeaway: You don't need the newest hardware to do serious work.

RAM: 8GB is the clear standard, covering 52.1% of devices, followed by 12GB at 18.2%.

Screen size: Of the devices with a known screen size, about 61% are the large 12.9" or 13" models, and over 95% are 11" or larger. When people pay to do CAD on an iPad, they overwhelmingly choose the bigger screens.

Recommendations by how you work

Getting started, learning CAD, or designing for 3D printing on a budget: the base iPad (A16) with an Apple Pencil (USB-C). It covers the simple use case well, and it's the lowest-cost way into manufacturing-ready CAD. A used iPad that supports iPadOS 17 works too.

The sweet spot for most people: the iPad Air (M3, 13") with Apple Pencil Pro. M-series performance, 8GB of RAM, and the big screen. Everything that matters for CAD, without paying for what doesn't.

The complex use case: the iPad Pro (M5, 13"), ideally the 1TB configuration for 16GB of RAM and nano-texture glass. Add a keyboard and you have a full CAD workstation in a tablet.
